"way of yielding". The techniques were developed around the principle
of using an attacker's energy against him, rather than directly opposing it. It is
a martial art, combat sport and a self-defense system that focuses on grappling
and especially ground fighting. It is spelled several ways which may add to the
confusion. It is spelled, "jiu jitsu, jujitsu, juijitsu and jiujitsu".
Jujitsu is the father of Judo, Aikido and some argue Korean Hapkido. Korean
Hapkido does not focus on wrestling or ground fighting, although it incorporates
many joint lock and finger locking techniques used in Aikido. Jiujitsu promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique, most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. Jiu Jitsu can be trained for self defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi), physical fitness &/or mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Grappling Grappling refers to techniques, maneuvers, and counters applied to an opponent (sometimes making use of the clothing of either person) in order to gain a physical advantage or to escape a dangerous position. Grappling is a general term that encompasses several disciplines or styles practiced throughout the world. Grappling is practiced as a sport and as a form of self defense, but does not include striking or the use of weapons. Some grappling disciplines, however, do teach defensive tactics against strikes and weapons. Wrestling Wrestling is a sport in which two unarmed opponents grapple with one another. The object is to secure a fall, ie,. Cause the opponent to lose balance and fall to the floor and ultimately to pin the opponent’s shoulders to the floor through the us of body grips, strength and ground techniques.
