Sunday, March 16th, 2008 at 12pm - FREE Easter Egg Hunt to all AFA
Students, family members and friends on Sunday, March 16th, 2008 at noon!
This is a free event and ALL are welcome. Please let us know if you
are able to come and who you will be bringing just so we can make sure we
have enough candy and prizes during the event. AFA will provide some
juice, coffee, snacks & of course the Easter Egg Hunt with lots of
candy & prizes!! It is not necessary but if you would like to
bring something we would request fruit, veggies, juice or some soda to
share. We will most likely get a couple of moon bounces so we would
like to have some teen/adult volunteers to sign up to monitor the moon
bounces in 30 minute intervals. You can sign up in the waiting room.
This event will run from 11:30am - 4pm. The Easter Egg Hunt will
begin at noon; we will have the younger kids in the back yard behind the
karate school and the older kids in the grass area to the right of Style
& Go Hair Salon. More details to come as we sort them out.
Karate Camp - Register Today!
We will be running Karate Camp during the Spring Recess (April 14th-18th,
2008) and during certain weeks in the summer. If you are interested,

During Karate Camp we have a lot of fun! We constantly change our
activity during the day to make it fun, interesting & challenging.
I look forward to advancing some of the students who attended last year.
All levels are welcome. For those students who never attended Camp,
we will work basic cartwheels, roundoffs, handstands, rolls, bridge,
tricks kataform and regular karate. For those who are ready we will
be working the back handspring, front handspring, one handed cartwheel
& roundoff, butterfly kick, aerial, 540 & 720. Camp is the
best opportunity to take your karate to the next level. A typical
camp day would consist of the following with open play/break time in
between activities.

Tournaments
March 2nd, 2008. Our next tournament will be on Sunday, March 2nd,
2008 at North Branford High School! Please hand in your paper work
before Monday!!!! 2/25/08. If you have never competed before, now is
the time!! These tournaments are smaller, close to home and run
well. The more AFA students we can get to compete, the better!
Normally I don't push the tournaments but I would really like to see AFA
Karate dominate at this tournament. The past few months we have been
so impressed on how well all the students have been doing at the school!
Now we would like to show you all off to the other instructors who will be
at the tournament.
Saturday, April 5th due to a tournament in Warwick, RI - This is the
biggest tournament in the WORLD! If you are not ready to compete at
this level, this tournament is a great opportunity to get away & get
excited about the karate that is out there!! If any of you have seen
karate competition on TV, I can tell you that most of the people on TV
will be at this event! This tournament is truly the best of the
best! There will be competition going on from Friday through Sunday!
& there is a spectacular night time show on Saturday night that will
just put you in Awe!
April 20th, 2008. This tournament will be held at Branford High
School & it is a KRANE rated tournament. I would suggest that
only students who have competed before to register for this tournament.
This tournament will be bigger than you are used to and may be an all day
event so make sure you don't make any other plans for rest of the day.
This is a great opportunity for our regular competitors to challenge
themselves in a larger event. There are only 4 Krane rated
tournaments in CT & this is one of them, right in our backyard.
When Sensei & I competed all the time we had to travel to Boston &
RI almost every weekend to compete so this is a great opportunity to have
great competition with OUT the 5 hour round trip travel time.

We recently received the following email from one of our former
students. We thought everyone would enjoy reading what he said about his
training at AFA Karate!
5/07
It has been ten years since I last trained
with you... But I haven't forgotten most of my lessons. After serving
almost six years in the Air Force, I became a Hartford Police Officer.
Last year I transferred to Meriden PD. The training I received from you
has allowed me to come home safe more than once. You have provided me
the basics in my Martial Arts training. I take it with me where ever I
go.
Over the past ten years I have continued my
Martial Arts training studying various arts and both military and
police combat tactics. I achieved an apprentice black belt level in
Tang Soo Do and currently I am training in Kempo Karate. Though I am a
cop, my goal is to one day combine the martial arts and police work to teach
to others. Specifically, focusing on reality based self defense, and
crime and terrorism awareness for the everyday civilian.
Again, thank you for the teachings and training. You
truly give life saving skills. It is funny but when it was the real
thing the techniques that helped most were that of balance and reactionary
speed. The fast blocking techniques and basic wrist locks have
done wonders.

A.F.A. Karate Owner
Receives 6th Degree & Renshi Title!
Sensei George Fusco, Jr. owner of A.F.A. Karate on Route 80 in North Branford
received his 6th Degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate along with the title of
"Renshi". Renshi translates to "polished teacher" or
"polished warrior". This is an exceptional title that is
presented to deserving individuals 6th degree black belt or higher who have
proven to be a great instructor. The test was administered by 10th Degree
Grand Master, Dr. Robert Braff from Madison, Ohio and 9th Degree Black Belt, Dr.
Kevin Hufford of Trumansberg, NY. The test consisted of over 3 hours of
grueling physical, mental & emotional challenges. In addition Mr.
Fusco had to prove to the panel that he is a worthy teacher by having his
students perform, teach & answer questions from the panel about his ability
as a teacher. Sensei Fusco has been training in the Martial Arts for over
25 years, he & his wife, Roseann own A.F.A. Karate in North Branford which
has been in business for over 17 years. The panel of judges was so
impressed with Sensei Fusco's teachings that they invited him to test for his
"Soke" title in 6 to 12 months! This was both a surprise &
compliment to Sensei Fusco. "Soke" means originator of own style or
system. The Soke title is the finest recognition of all Martial Arts
instructors. Sensei Fusco would like to thank the judges who traveled from
afar & students of A.F.A. Karate for participating on his test. If you
would like more information about A.F.A. Karate, George or Roseann Fusco please
call (203) 484-4565 or visit them on the web at www.AFAKarate.com.

Saturday Class
11am-12:30pm instructed by Sensei Mike Chamberlain - $5 fee, free for all
instructors who teach at least 1 day per week.
This class is for all students who want to become a better & smarter
fighter. Sensei Mike is one if the smartest fighters I know & you will
benefit from this class. During this class you are expected to do your best,
period. When Sensei Mike & I started talking about this class, he said he
only wants people who want to get better, people who are willing to work hard.
During this class, no student will ever get pushups for misbehaving, whining or
complaining, they will just be told to go wait in the waiting room & they
will not be allowed to return to this class until Sensei Mike says it is OK.
Although this is a class to make your fighting better, most of the class will
consist of fighting necessities, practicing drills, explanation/application of
fighting theories & techniques. This class is also open to any parents or
family members who want to participate; it is great exercise & conditioning.
Anyone can be a great fighter; you just need time, practice & willpower.
Fighting is a great way to increase your endurance, balance/coordination,
reflexes, flexibility, and respect for the karate practitioner in your family.
Its not as easy as it looks!
*Novice Weapons
Class-Tues 6pm
We will begin our novice weapons class on Tuesday, October 3rd, 2005 at 6pm.
This class is for all belt ranks from white to black that want to learn weapons
and DO NOT know the Kama Sho Kata. There is NO charge for this class. We will
teach weapons to anyone who wants to learn them and who behaves. Because weapons
are an additional benefit to our regular curriculum, if a student doesn’t try
as well as we expect then that student will be suspended from the weapons class
for 3 weeks or until a instructor feels the student is ready to behave as
expected. If you are suspended from weapons class you will be allowed to try
again after a 3 class break. We will only allow 20 students to try the Novice
weapons class so if you are interested please see Sensei Roseann to get on the
list. If you are signed up for the list & miss 2 consecutive classes, your
place will be given to the next person on the list. Once a student can perform
Kama Sho then they will advance to the advanced weapons class held on Mondays at
6pm.
Sensei Rick's KEMPO Classes
Sensei Rick teaches Kempo Karate to anyone who wants to learn. The fee for this
class is $5 per class. If you teach on a regular basis (at least once a week)
then there is no charge for this class.
TKD Classes
For those of you who haven’t noticed, Sensei George’s cousin, Peter
Bonfiglio has been teaching TKD Classes to his students on Tuesdays &
Thursdays. Sensei Bonfiglio used to own his own school, (Bonfiglios school of
TKD) in North Haven, CT. It is a great pleasure to have him & his students
training with us here at A.F.A. Sensei Bonfiglio will be with us at least until
the beginning of October. If anyone is interested in joining his class please
see Sensei Roseann & we will work something out for you. Beginning in
October, Sensei Bonfiglio will be teaching a beginner TKD class for the town of
North Branford at their community center on Tuesdays & Thursdays. If you run
into Sensei Bonfiglio at our school, please introduce yourself & feel free
to ask him any questions you may have.
Congratulations
to our newest first degree Back Belt students!
