Sensei Richard
S. Quarequio, Jr. developed an interest in the Martial Arts at about age six
when his older brother began taking lessons at a local Tae Kwon Do school.
He asked his parents to enroll him also, but his mother thought it was much too
dangerous. She recommended that he take dance or gymnastics. That
was of course, not an acceptable substitute for martial arts at the time.
Richard has commented several times how much he regrets that decision; looking
back at how much that would have benefited him today.
Finally after
much begging and pleading he began taking martial arts at the age of eleven,
studying under Master Robert Liedke at American Institute of Martial Arts in the
art of Aikido. The school
incorporated some Judo, Ju-jitsu and Tae Kwon Do, which started Richard out at
an early age understanding the importance of variety in martial arts training.
This is a view point that has been praised by some, and frowned upon by
others.
Richard stood
with Master Liedke for about two years and began assisting with classes in a
matter of months after he started training, finding a love for teaching that has
always endured. The classes for
children were quite limited at the time and Richard knew that he needed more;
his interest was boarding on obsession.
At the age of
thirteen, Richard began training at what would become his main style, Kempo.
Richard began training at Fred Villari’s Studios under Sensei Robert
Fleming and proceeded to train in earnest, finding a love for the style.
Still, even with that love, it did not stop him from exploring other
styles every chance that presented itself and can claim in Tae! Kwon Do , Tang
So Do, Ninjitsu, Chi-Kung, Praying Mantis Kung Fu, Ju-Jitsu, 5 animal Kung Fu,
Shotokan and Circular Dragon Fist Kung Fu.
Richard never view rank as a very important aspect, nevertheless he has
achieved a third degree black belt in Shaolin Kempo.
In 2002 Richard
was well deservingly inducted into 3 martial arts Halls of Fame.
He was nominated to the Eastern USA International Hall of Fame for
special recognition in the Martial arts, the Action Martial Arts Hall of Fame
for Excellence in Teaching and the World Wide Martial Arts Hall of Fame for
Instructor of the year.
In 2003 he was
again inducted into the Eastern USA International Hall of Fame, this time with
the Pinnacle of Success Award. Richard
is currently studying Shotokan with Sensei George Fusco, Jr. at the Assembly of
the Fighting Arts & Circular Dragon Fist Kung Fu under Sifu Ross Antisdale
at
Shaolin
Kempo
Academy
. The former is an art Richard was
introduced to by Sensei Willie Conyers when they taught together at
Stars
Academy
; the latter from a childhood friend that Richard has been fortunate enough to
keep in contact with.
Richard has
developed a strong interest in these styles and feels as though they greatly
compliment his “base” style of Kempo. He
currently teaches Shotokan under Sensei Fusco and is a great asset to the
Assembly of the Fighting Arts.
